Preparing for your Maternity Session
When to Schedule:
The best time to schedule is no earlier than 28 weeks and no later than 34 weeks. This helps to make sure you do not go into labor prior to capturing your growing belly.
Some Things to Think About:
Do you plan to be clothed the entire time? Do you love the intimate look of skin on skin? Will someone else be in the photos with you? What do you plan to do with the images, print them, make a book, print a canvas or do you want to hang a mixture of maternity photos and newborn photos in a wall collection in your home? Knowing these details and what your plans are helps me capture those perfect memories.
What Should You Wear:
I have a wide selection of maternity gowns, fabrics, and bandeaus in various sizes available for you to wear during your maternity session with me. Many women choose to go au natural or at least topless/sports bra with a pair of cute undies/jeans/skirt (mostly for indoor studio photography). If that is out of your comfort level, try to choose a fitted top—something that accentuates the bust line and belly. If your clothes are too big, your belly will not be highlighted, and that is the main idea of these pictures. If you despise your pregnancy jeans (the ones with the panel), I suggest a maxi dress or leggings with a top. If you’ll have someone (your partner, children) in the photos, be sure to select clothing and accessories for them that do not distract from the main subject: you and your beautiful belly.
What to Bring:
Comfortable shoes!! Having a pair of shoes that are easy to slip on and slip off to walk from location to location is best. For images, I do suggest a high heel even if the shoes are not visible. Posture and poise are very different when standing in flats vs high heels (they do not need to be your 4'' heels you used to rock on the dance floor either). Do you have a dog, would you like to include them in the session?? Please feel free to include your fur babies, just let me know in advance.
Your hands will definitely be in these images, and to ensure your uttermost happiness with them, I highly suggest getting a manicure/pedicure prior to your session. Try to stay away from bright colors or pattern designs. Neutral, soft colors are ideal so as to not take away from your belly. If you’re wearing your engagement ring or wedding band, try to give it a mild cleaning to ensure it’s at its prettiest with close-ups. If men are in the images, try to make sure their hands and nails are clean and cut. Avoid scheduling anything right after the session, allowing you less to worry about running late to another appointment or engagement.
These moments are to be cherished, not rushed through.
